For a second year running, our ‘Family Forest Day’ welcomed parents with their inquisitive young children to spend time connecting with nature. Each family was able to explore and experience the forest with our guide, Lucy O’Hagan of the Phoenix Forest School.
Children got creative by moulding clay and collecting natural materials from the forest floor to make models. Some mastered rope balancing whilst others made stained cloths using ferns, berries and a mallet, and others made woodland jewelry.
A scavenger hunt took place to find items in the forest and, of course, obligatory games of ‘Hide & Seek’ which included wolf howling much to children’s delight – Ouuwwww Ouuuwww Aaoouwwww!
Finally, the best part was definitely left to last, toasting marshmallows around the camp fire with Lucy.
Phoenix Forest School
The Phoenix Forest School is founded by Lucy O’Hagan. The school provides woodland experiences through creative outdoor learning, nature based play and bush craft activities. Lucy’s passion is clearly cherished by all who join her classes.
As a result, schools, youth organisations, home-schoolers and private groups all use the school to connect with Mother Nature. We really can’t think of a better way to spend family time in Phoenix Park, which lies a few minutes from the centre of Dublin.
It was wonderful to see families really being present and enjoying the moment with their children. We all know how life can sometimes run away from us but ensuring we keep outdoor family time without the distraction of general day-to-day stress, work or devices has huge benefits.
Some benefits of being outdoors:
Boosts creativity and focus
Improves mood and self-esteem
Increases Vitamin D levels
Strengthens immune systems
Positively increases family wellbeing
Spending time in nature boosts happiness and strengthens our relationships which is why we love encouraging these activities through our social events.
To conclude, we would like to give a very big thank you to Brittany Winkelman Photography, who captured so many precious moments on her camera and made the beautiful video above.
